Science

Engaging in the practices of science helps students understand how scientific knowledge develops; such direct involvement gives them an appreciation of the wide range of approaches that are used to investigate, model and explain the world.

— National Research Council, 2012

All four disciplines, including earth and space science, life science, physical science, and technology/engineering are included in each grade level. The integration of multiple disciplines allows students to better understand science concepts that span all fields of science as well as ELA, math, and the design world such as sustainability and technology-based solutions to problems.

Community Core Tools:

Our OSS scientists develop broad depth of knowledge and its application, they also practice critical Community Core tools that serve as constant habits of mind:

  • Question and Pose Problems

  • Seek the Whole Truth

  • Research Before Action

  • Reframe Mistakes

  • Strive for Accuracy

  • Communicate Clearly

Community as Campus Connections:

Our Sisters’ School understands that in science, practices are not separate from the concepts that we teach. The best way to integrate concepts and practices is with hands-on practice inside and outside the science lab classroom. OSS scientists routinely explore, discover, and apply their understanding of the natural world in our very own OSS Garden. Each week, we also engage in learning activities hosted by local partners including Community Boating Center, Buttonwood Park Zoo, or Carabiners. In addition, we participate in Citizen Science through national programs such as EcoSchools USA, Sci Starter. Exercising our commitment to justice, we integrate our scientific understandings into our lives and take environmental and social action through projects like the People’s Eco Challenge.
